WHEN DID YOU BECOME A MADONNA FAN?

I have WORSHIPPED her since I heard her first track on the radio, sunbathing in my back yard at 12 or 13. And I DID think she was black- she sounded too cool to be a white chick.

HOW DID MADONNA COME INTO YOUR LIFE?

My first day in Hollywood, I worked assisting Madonna’s sister Paula Ciccone in the accounting department of O PICTURES… a production company that had produced MANY Madonna videos. Madonna had gotten her sister Paula the accounting job. I was just an intern working for free to get my foot in the door. I was only 20 years old and VERY eager to work!!! I knew the company had done Madonna videos so I wore my Madonna “Justify My Love” T-Shirt to work PROUDLY… not knowing I would be assigned to work with Madonna’s sister. Well, I was sent in to work in Paula’s office and she just glared at me- wouldn’t even talk to me. So I went back out to the reception area where a few girls had gathered and were now laughing. They KNEW that Paula would throw a FIT having to stare at her sister, Madonna, on some kid’s T-Shirt in her office all day but they let me go in wearing it anyway just to see what would happen. They gave me an O PICTURES T-Shirt to put back on instead and sent me back into Paula’s office. Paula said, “Much better”… and we got to work…

Incidentally… I took up smoking cigarettes because Paula smoked out on the roof of the production company so, of course, I always jumped at the chance to BOND with her and so I would always want to chat with her on her cigarette breaks… to see if I could get any gossip… well, I did… but even better, I MUST ADD… I actually ended up really enjoying getting to know Paula as a friend who actually never spoke much about her sister… But anyway… it was through this production company that I would get work on sets…

…I met Jean-Baptiste Mondino on the Bjork VIOLENTLY HAPPY video shoot the day after the big Earthquake in LA in January 1994. There were still aftershocks shaking the rafters on the soundstage as Mondino’s wife packed up his family to move back to Paris from their Malibu home just a few miles away. She did NOT like the earthquake one bit.

It was Mondino who later introduced me to Madonna on the set of the HUMAN NATURE video. I remember we all waited for her to walk out onto set to begin shooting in that amazing tight black leather outfit… as she stepped onto that soundstage in Hollywood off Melrose with gal pal Ingrid at her side, Madonna strutting in her boots, stepping over cables and wires to reach the white set… EVERYONE SILENCED… about 45 people went silent- just staring and watching her walk. It was one of the coolest moments in my life that I will NEVER forget. She took my breath away- for me… it was like, MADONNA… FINALLY!

On that shoot I remember sneaking Hot Tamales into her bowl of snacks. She immediately snatched them up to nibble. I laughed at that with the producer on set who didn’t believe me when I told her that I knew Madonna’s favourite snack. But sure enough, that was all we saw her eat all day after that.

Madonna and I have worked together many times since and each time is productive and exciting. We have a sincere respect for one another and our work together. And we have fun and laugh a lot- Madonna has an awesome sense of humor about herself now… very healthy. She seems quite happy in her life now, which is so inspiring.

IS SHE DIFFERENT FROM THE MADONNA YOU THOUGHT SHE WAS?

No, Madonna was Madonna… It’s strange when you are as well known and as well watched as she is- almost studied. I felt like I was meeting an old friend again after years apart- which must feel strange for HER. But, if I could have gone back in time and met ANY Madonna- worked on ANY video with her? It would have to be the Madonna I personally fell hardest in love with- Madonna as SUSAN… With the letters M and C on her orange top, her rhinestone studded boots and cigarette, sitting on the old ratty couch out on the sidewalk in front of the Magic Club, DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN, shot in New York City in 1984, released in 1985.

MONDINO IS ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED DIRECTORS AND MADONNA, BESIDES BEING YOUR FAVOURITE ICON, IS ONE OF THE MOST DEMANDING AND CUTTING-EDGE STARS. WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE TO WORK ALONG WITH THEM?

It feels awesome- I take great pride in the career I have made for myself- I LOVE my clients most of the time and it’s GREAT fun!

MADONNA AND MONDINO EDITED “HOLLYWOOD” AT YOUR OWN STUDIO, AVIDDIVA. TELL US MORE ABOUT MADONNA'S INVOLVEMENT IN THIS PROCESS.

Madonna is VERY involved and will comb through an edit quite carefully- asking to review specific takes in which she can recall certain gestures and moments she knows she gave to the camera… so we do a lot of watching and laughing.

HOW DID YOU COME TO REALIZE THE VIDEO FOR "NOBODY KNOWS ME"?

When Madonna came to my studio for the Hollywood edit, I showed her a rough montage of magazine covers I had done as an homage to her in my feature self-portrait called "Pumping Velvet". As the montage was ending she screamed, "But there’s MORE! THERE’S A LOT MORE!"

She left my studio in silence… I think she was shocked to see everything in her life put into SOME kind of linear order. I think it overwhelmed her a bit at first. About an hour later I got a call from Caresse Henry, Madonna’s manager at the time, and she said, “I’m calling you NOT as Madonna’s manager but as Madonna’s FRIEND… I’ve NEVER seen her so QUIET… she didn’t say ONE WORD the whole way back to her house from your studio after you showed her your work… even when I dropped her off… she was deep in thought… well, she just called me and she’d like to talk to you about cutting everything she’s ever done, in order, to your own remix of “NOBODY KNOWS ME”… and that will be the video for this next single and we’ll give it to clubs but it won’t play on MTV so we can include whatever we want.”

Thank GOD I had been archiving EVERYTHING Madonna had ever done as I was finalizing my personal homage to her to include in my movie… and now I had a GREAT reason to finally FINISH the montage… with MADONNA’S COMMISSION! I don’t think I could have said, “no problem, ok, let’s do it” to NOBODY KNOWS ME if I HADN’T been collecting images already… SHE HAS DONE AN OBSCENE AMOUNT OF STUFF and it had taken me YEARS to collect and digitally archive! I actually spent about $60,000.00 of my own money on this Madonna homage project. But what could be a better end to my story of being an obsessed MADONNA fan then to put all my obsessing and collecting to good use for the QUEEN MOTHER herself. It was GREAT fun. I even hired my cousin to help review all her work diaries to help place events and happenings and release dates… It took us a MONTH alone to just organize everything!

HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN MADONNA ASKED YOU TO REALIZE THE VIDEO FOR "NOBODY KNOWS ME"?

Deeply, DEEPLY honored.

WERE YOU WORRIED ABOUT SHOWING YOUR WORK TO THE ONE OF THE GREATEST ICONS OF OUR TIME?

No, not at all… I’m VERY confident and proud of my work and feel it is work that Madonna can relate to and find interesting. I had no worries. It was GREAT fun and again, an honor and a dream come true to share my talent with her.

MADONNA GAVE YOU SOME UNPUBLISHED VERSACE STILLS... CAN YOU SHOW US SOME OF THEM?

They are in the video. She has a fan and is laying on a bed in one of them.

WHEN SHALL WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE VIDEO AIRED ON TV OR ON DVD?

“NOBODY KNOWS ME” is OUT THERE kids… you just have to find it- but will you find the director’s cut? IT IS POSSIBLE, BUT GOOD LUCK TO YOU! I hand out copies ALL the time in cities around the world. A lot of DJ’s at clubs around the world have it… and DJ reps in London have my REMIX DVD which includes the director’s cut of “NOBODY KNOWS ME” in addition to some other rare gems including the director’s cut of “HOLLYWOOD” REMIX. I think it’s very cool to keep it as underground as possible for as long as possible. It’s VERY cool and neither MADONNA nor myself can make any money off of “NOBODY KNOWS ME” so it deserves at least that anonymity, no pun intended.

FOR THE VIDEO YOU USED YOUR OWN TRACK THAT YOU REMIXED USING SAMPLES FROM OLD MADONNA SAMPLES MIXED INTO "NOBODY KNOWS ME". WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THIS REMIX? WHAT DID MADONNA SAY WHEN SHE LISTENED TO IT FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME?

She absolutely LOVED it- I remember she kept leaving it everywhere she’d go because she was always listening to it over and over. Her office requested 3 separate discs be sent out to M wherever she was around the world during the job and her considering performing the track. She would leave it in a hotel in NY and then we’d have to find out where she was going to be next and send her a new CD there. It was hysterical and flattering that she HAD to have one with her at all times.

DO YOU THINK YOU KNOW HER AFTER ALL YOU'VE SEEN AND THE TIMES YOU'VE MET HER?

Yes, actually… in this funny way… I think I really get her. Sure, you can ALWAYS know more about ANYBODY… but I get her- I think she’s great.

IS THERE A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MADONNA AS AN ARTIST AND MADONNA AS A WOMAN IN HER REAL LIFE?

Truman Capote once wrote, “All any artist has is their life” and Madonna has used her life well to compliment her work and vice versa. What she does is efficient and inspiring.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE MADONNA SONG?

Madonna “Into the Groove”, hands down, my FAVOURITE Madonna song of all time. I have literally LIVED to that song on dance floors worldwide for the better part of the last two decades. It will ALWAYS make me dance no matter what. Her performance of “INTO THE GROOVE” for CIAO ITALIA… when she and the dancers go back and forth across that massive stage in that massive stadium filled with screaming Italian fans… OH MY GOD! I weep tears of JOY every time I see this specific moment in Madonna’s life. IT WAS TRANSCENDENT beyond words!

SINCE WE KNOW FOR CERTAIN THAT YOU ARE A DIE-HARD MADONNA FAN, WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHICH IS OR HAS BEEN THE MOST IMPORTANT TURNING POINT IN MADONNA'S CAREER IN YOUR OPINION.

When Madonna threw down her black top hat at the end of “Truth or Dare” after performing “Keep It Together”… for me that was IT. Blonde Ambition was the best she’ll ever be! THE PEAK… after that, it was WORK for her. NOT TO SAY THAT SHE HASN’T BEEN AMAZING EVERY STEP OF THE WAY! But I could see it in everything after that… even her attitude towards making videos and promotion had shifted… she started to get a bit bored of MAKING videos and obviously went on to MANY successful projects, albums, tours, movies, that people LOVE AND ADORE… but that original sparkle, that hunger that was being fulfilled… I believe, was… by the end of that film… I believe that everything that has come since has come heavier for her. That’s just my opinion based on watching her so closely.

WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE MADONNA MUSIC VIDEO AND WHY?

Oh god, so many different choices for different reasons… ok, I’ll pick ONE and stick to it… EXPRESS YOURSELF=EVERYTHING, JUSTIFY MY LOVE=THE SEX, VOGUE=THE GLAMOUR, BEDTIME STORIES=THE IMAGES, HOLLYWOOD REMIX=THE BRILLIANCE AND CAUSE IT’S MINE, ok… so I can’t pick ONE… I’m sorry… that’s the best I can do… and I still want to list more so next question, QUICK!

DO YOU THINK THAT MADONNA'S INVOLVEMENT FOR KABBALAH WILL HAVE A BIGGER IMPACT ON HER WORK IN THE FUTURE?

I hope so- it seems to bring her a lot of peace and happiness. It’s all good.

IT'S RUMOURED THAT “NOTHING REALLY MATTERS” WAS MEANT TO FOLLOW “NOBODY KNOWS ME” WITH SIMILAR CHOREOGRAPHY IN HER RE-INVENTION TOUR. THE VIDEO BACKGROUND TO “NOTHING REALLY MATTERS” WOULD HAVE BEEN THE ONE USED ON “NOBODY KNOWS ME” WITH THE LYRICS. AT THE BEGINNING THEY WANTED TO USE THE AVIDDIVA REMIX VIDEO OF “NOBODY KNOWS ME” BUT MADONNA THOUGHT IT WAS TOO SELF-CELEBRATING. IS THIS SOMETHING TRUE OR IS IT COMPLETELY FALSE?

It’s true… and there was also talk of her performing in front of my “NOBODY KNOWS ME REMIX VIDEO” at the MTV 20th anniversary VMA’s instead of “HOLLYWOOD” with Christina and Britney… but neither happened… I think Madonna is appropriately a bit more concerned with the NOW and wisely veers away from reviewing everything TOO SOON… she’s “NOT DONE YET” I think is her philosophy… and an EXCELLENT one to maintain.

LET'S TALK ABOUT THE RE-INVENTION TOUR- DID YOU ATTEND SOME SHOWS?

Everyone is going to HATE me… No, I must admit, I have not gone to see Madonna LIVE since the Blonde Ambition Tour because, for me, THAT WAS EVERYTHING I EVER NEEDED FROM HER and the way I most wanted to remember her and that time in my life. Of course I have seen ALL the tours on DVD and I LOVE them all… but… I have definitely focused on getting to work WITH her instead of just WATCH her. But I was in the audience for THE VIRGIN TOUR when she played DETROIT! And it was MIND BLOWING when she did GAMBLER!!! That’s gotta count for something! And I promise… I’ll go next time she’s ‘round.

Yes. I think so.
