[EXCLUSIVE] Drowned Madonna meets Dani Brubaker.
Category: Interviews & Statements.
After premiering the 2 Lipstik Clothing ad’s shot by photographer Dani Brubaker that have just been premiere side by side at the Premiere KIDS Show - click here - Drowned Madonna had the pleasure to talk with Dani Brubaker.
"In the twenty plus years Madonna has been in the public eye, her approach to life has been a simple one, don’t judge a book by it’s cover. That’s the thought I had going into the photo shoot for her English Rose clothing line," photographer Dani Brubaker tells Drowned Madonna. "I wanted to photograph the outward joy these kids displayed interacting with each other, yet capture the underlying spirit that unified them as one."
"Children are a serious business to Madonna," adds Brubaker. "Her daughter and two sons have three unique ethnic backgrounds, yet they are all bonded together with love as their guiding light. Those are the images I was shooting for (no pun intended) when I cast the kids."
"The photos, I believe, are a direct reflection of the central theme behind Madonna’s English Rose book series -- compassion and the williness to understand are inherent qualities in all human beings."
Dani Brubaker describes herself as a photojournalist, a journalist who presents a story primarily through the use of photographs.
"Pablo Picasso once stated that an artist is a receptacle for emotions, drawing inspiration from the earth, the sky or even a crumpled piece of paper," she says. "Though a camera lens is a far cry from a brush, placed in the rights hands, it can indeed paint a magnificent picture."
"I consider the art of photography a form of exploration, where the end product doesn’t need to be explained, nor can it be contained in words," Dani says to Drowned Madonna. "To me, the camera embodies a powerful medium of expression and communication, offering an infinite variety of perception as well as interpretation. The only question I want people to ask themselves when they view my work is a simple one. Do the images move you to dream, think and feel?"
"Over the many years that I worked as a Graphic Artist and a Retoucher in Oklahoma, Colorado and the Southern California area, I created print campaigns for a number of Fortune 500 companies, as well as Academy Award nominated films. Though it was thrilling to see my work displayed in corporate brochures, prominent national publications, and plastered on huge outdoor billboards, to this day, nothing is more moving than capturing raw human emotion on film. Whether it’s the twinkle in a child’s eye, the tender embrace of two people in love, or the playful banter between siblings, forever capturing those moments for posterity is what my photographs are all about."
"People come to me to find out who they are. There’s a simple reason why. To photograph truthfully and effectively, I look beneath the surface to record the sublime qualities of nature and humanity that lives and breathes in every one of us, regardless of age, character or size. When you view prints of my work years from now, they will come alive with the same intensity you felt the first time you ever saw them. Not everyone trusts a painting, but they do believe a photograph, especially mine."
