‘Shantaram’ is Madonna’s favourite book
Category: Books.
American actress Gwyneth Paltrow who is also Madonna’s best friend has revealed that ’Shantaram’ by Gregory David Roberts is among the pop singer’s favourite reads. The book tells the story about the life and adventures of an escaped Australian convict in Mumbai. The actress posted on her website her decision to set up a book club for Hollywood A listers, specifically to help best friend Madonna make a fresh start after her recent headline grabbing divorce from British director Guy Ritchie, The Mirror reported. Paltrow revealed her plans on her website and wrote that she has asked some celebrity friends to join in. “I feel a bit swallowed up in January, the days are so short, the sky is so close and grey. The best way to escape is to curl up by the fire with an amazing, transportive novel,” she said. “I like knowing the literary preferences of people, it gives a better understanding of their inner life,” Paltrow added. The actress who is married to British band Coldplay’s lead singer Chris Martin also revealed that Madonna’s favourite book was ‘The Bad Girl’ by Mario Vargas Llosa which chronicles the life of a teenager hungering for money and power.

''I Am Because We Are'' to be released as a Book next January.

From Madonna.com:
Power House Books is pleased to announce the January 2009 release of I Am Because We Are. Photographs by Kristen Ashburn. Foreword by Madonna.
I Am Because We Are is the companion volume to the acclaimed forthcoming documentary film directed by Nathan Rissman and written and produced by Madonna. This book of images by award-winning photojournalist Kristen Ashburn--culled from her own work in Malawi and Africa over the past seven years as well as from her specially commissioned photographs for the film--provides an intimate look at the lives of eight Malawian children featured in the film and reveals the harsh reality of the AIDS pandemic throughout southern Africa.
The title is derived from the concept of ’Ubuntu,’ an idea in African spirituality that states that all of humanity is connected, that we cannot be ourselves without community, that an individual’s well-being is dependent upon the well-being of others.
These heart-wrenching stories are a call to action. In Malawi, a country of 13 million people, over one million are orphans. Looking into the hearts and minds of children who have suffered more than one can imagine, the book provides an unflinching view of life at the center of the global AIDS crisis. This is not just a story about orphans in Malawi, but about global responsibility and human interconnectedness.
I Am Because We Are includes a foreword by Madonna, an after word by Ashburn, excerpts from interviews with Malawian children, their biographies, and extended captions. Author proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the charitable organization Raising Malawi for their extensive work with orphans throughout Malawi.
Kristen Ashburn’s photographs and stories from the Middle East, Europe, and Africa have appeared in many publications worldwide. Her accolades include a 2007 Emmy Award nomination, two World Press Photo prizes, a Getty Foundation grant in 2006, Canon’s Female Photojournalist Award in 2004, and other honors. She began photographing the impact of AIDS in southern Africa in 2001, and since then has also produced stories on the war in Iraq, Jewish settlers and suicide bombers in Israel’s occupied territories, and the aftermath of the tsunami in Sri Lanka and Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. In addition to her humanitarian photography, Ashburn is one of the directors of Through the Eyes of Children: The Rwanda Project, a charity that teaches photography to Rwandan orphans of the 1994genocide and supports them through the sale of their images.

More on the Animal Rights Campaigners protests.
Category: Books.
The RSPCA has told Sky News Online a Madonna photoshoot which involved dyeing her sheep different colours was "irresponsible".
The 49-year-old singer painted sheep on her country estate in blue, yellow, pink and green for the American edition of Vogue magazine.
But animal rights campaigners say the "stunt" threatens to start "a craze" among her fans, which could danger British livestock.
An RSPCA spokeswoman told Sky News: "The paints can be toxic so you have to be careful which ones you use."
A statement from the organisation said: "Publicity stunts or advertising campaigns involving animals can sometimes lead to copycat incidents when animals may be harmed."
The pop star claims the shoot was in homage to celebrated photographer Cecil Beaton, a previous owner of her £9m Wiltshire estate.
The images are to be used in a forthcoming celebrity homes book entitled Vogue Living, commissioned by the American edition of the Conde Nast fashion title.
But a spokeswoman for the British Vogue - which was not involved in the Madonna photos - told Sky News health and safety rules should always be carefully scrutinised before embarking on a shoot.
"We follow strict guidelines and would make sure the owners were present and they were happy," she said.
The sheep - owned by Madonna and director husband Guy Ritchie - were painted in non-toxic dye similar to that used in the farming community.
But the RSPCA said claims of ’artistic merit’ failed to justify the same use as in agriculture.
A spokeswoman said: "When farmers mark animals they are putting them through the sheep dip or preparing them for treatment they need, which is in the animal’s best interest."

New York Noise.
Category: Books.
In the late 1970s and 1980s, New York sizzled. The economically ravaged city became an affordable refuge for a wave of artists, performers and impresarios. Creative envelopes were pushed, clubs descended into debauchery and the DIY ethos of punk prevailed.
Recording it was Paula Court, resident photographer at the Kitchen Centre, a performance space that nurtured America’s avant-garde and numbered Philip Glass and Laurie Anderson among its prime movers.
Court’s book New York Noise features more than 400 shots of the era’s leading lights including Madonna, Andy Warhol, Patti Smith and William Burroughs. She prefers to let her pictures do the talking.

ANITA SARKO Disc jockey
"When I arrived in downtown Manhattan from the Midwest in the late 1970s, I thought, ‘This is it.’ It was Bohemia’s last gasp - imagine the most progressive kindergarten, where you could follow your whims, uncontrolled by adults. It wasn’t a case of “We’ll all do this or that” — everybody just got it. Or if you didn’t you ran out of there screaming.
It was like life as performance art, but without the creepy pretentiousness. Whatever you wanted to do, you did it. If you wanted to paint, you came here to paint; if you wanted to be a musician, you picked up a damn guitar.
I used to DJ at this amazing place called Squat Theatre, which was put on by an East European theatrical troupe who came to New York on tour and never went back. They took care of Nico when she got strung out and put on these avant-garde shows where Sun Ra would perform and John Cale would come and do his viola stuff.
Then there was Danceteria, which we held in a mansion on Second Avenue near Gramercy Park that we rented off this old gay guy. Everybody was having sex in every corner and on every staircase. Madonna was a regular and she was really awful. When she got famous she became very nice, but back then I’d get into big fights with her — she would scream for me to make the music louder but the owner had a big padlock on the amp.
I also played at Andy Warhol’s funeral wake in 1987. I ended up next to him at some dinner party once. He was very sweet, but one of the most boring people I’ve ever met."

Vogue Living: Houses, Gardens, People''.
Category: Books.
Released on October 2007, "Vogue Living: Houses, Gardens, People" is unique book of thirty-six spectacular houses and gardens—whose owners come from the worlds of fashion, music, art, and society—draws not only on stories that have appeared in the pages of Vogue and Vogue Living over the past two decades but also on images that have never before been published.
Amoung the others, the book shows Madonna and Guy Ritchie’s romantic rural retreat in the depths of the English countryside. It’s the legendary Ashcombe estate of 1,000 acres of rolling hills and valleys. The late legendary portrait photographer Cecil Beaton leased the place for 15 years in the 1930s and ’40s. And leave it to Vogue and Madonna to pay tribute to Beaton’s extravagant lifestyle by temporarily dyeing some of the Ritchies’ sheep pastel pink, blue, yellow and green just for their photo shoot.
The book has been written by Vogue editor Hamish Bowles.
