Special thanks to our friends at Vanit Fair:
VANITY FAIR TO AUCTION OFF GLOBE SIGNED BY MADONNA AND TWO TICKETS TO AN EXCLUSIVE MADONNA PERFORMANCE IN NEW YORK
New York, N.Y.—Vanity Fair will auction off the one-of-a-kind globe featured with Madonna on the cover of the May Green Issue and signed by her, along with two tickets to a very special performance by Madonna in New York City at the end of April. All proceeds will benefit Raising Malawi, a charity committed to revitalizing the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children in Malawi, Africa.

The May issue marks Madonna’s 10th appearance on the cover of Vanity Fair. Shot by photographer Steven Meisel, she is pictured leaning against the globe, which is four feet in diameter and weighs approximately eighty pounds. The inspiration for the image came to editor Graydon Carter from a midcentury fashion-magazine cover, and Vanity Fair’s fashion and style director, Michael Roberts, sketched several images, channeling not just the fashion cover but also the work of Czech photographer Frantisek Drtikol from the 20s.
The orb was suspended from the ceiling during the photo shoot at Smashbox Studios in Los Angeles on February 21, 2008. Following the shoot, Madonna signed the globe and drew a heart over Africa.

Bidders may go to www.vanityfair.com to be connected to eBay where they may bid on the globe and the tickets. Bidding begins today and will end on April 18.
The event is being managed on eBay Giving Works, eBay’s dedicated program for charity listings, by Auction Cause, a premier online auction management agency specializing in high-profile design, strategy, and cause marketing for corporations and nonprofits worldwide. For more information, please visit www.auctioncause.com.

Rare signed Madonna synth used for ''Music'' on auction.
Category: Auctions.
Drowned Madonna readers brought to our attention an interesting auction on eBay.
This is what the auctioner says:
I used to rent a studio opposite "Sarm West" studios in west London and Madonna came there with ther producer Mirwais to record "Music" and some other tracks. I knew the studio manager (she was my manager at the time as well), and got a call that they needed a "microwave xt" synth for the Madonna sessions. Mirwais couldn’t find anyone to rent, so I borrowed them mine for the sessions and in return Madonna signed it! Madonna said to my manager that she never signed an instrument before, so you won’t find another instrument signed or used by her. Specially for a Madonna no1 record. This is a piece of unique "music" history.
The synth was used for the Mirwais tracks for the album (no1 hit "Music"), and it’s signed by Madonna on the back. There’s a protective film over the autograph to preserve it, and the synth is fully functioning. (There’s a few small scratches from normal studio use only) The story was featured in some music mags at the time, and my ex managers got her/his names in the album "thank you’s" as well. I’ll post worldwide and if you got any questions, please get in touch!

''Rain'' chair to be auctioned.
Category: Auctions.
Christie's announced today that Marc Newson’s “Lockheed Lounge - LC1” chair will be auctioned in London's King Streen on October 14.

The chair, which has a top estimate of 1,200,000 British pounds, has been designed and exhibited by Australian-born Marc Newson in 1985. It has been produced for an exhibition at the Roslyn Oxley Gallery in Sydney.
The prototype Lockheed was purchased by the National Gallery of Southern Australia, and images of the prototype swiftly circulated to international praise. Newson reworked the technical shortcomings of the original prototype to produce the Lockheed as a limited edition.
In 1993 the Lockheed was brought to a wider audience when featured as the centrepiece in Madonna’s 1993 video for her single, ’Rain’.
Two years later Vitra Design Museum included the Lockheed in their highly influential travelling exhibition of 100 Masterpieces, and in 2000 the chaise was the focus of the Carnegie Art Museum’s aluminium retrospective.

Dick Clarke to auction mementos of music history.
Category: Auctions.
American television host legend Dick Clark will auction off 50 years worth of musical memorabilia. The American Bandstand host said in a statement Wednesday that he has decided to sell his collection with the help of New York auction house Guernsey’s this December.
Dick Clark described himself a pack rat for amassing his vast collection over the years. The collection has been in storage in a massive California warehouse.
"I think back over the years and I realize I have become a true pack rat," the 76-year-old Clark, who suffered a serious stroke in 2004, said in the statement.
"Whenever anybody gave me a memento or I asked for one, I would treasure it. Now with the auction of my collection at hand, I’m really excited to have a chance to turn over something that has belonged to me, so that someone else can enjoy it."
Around 900 lots to be sold in a no-reserve auction, with all items selling to the highest bidder, Guernsey’s said. Highlights will include the microphone Clark used from his very first taping of American Bandstand on July 9, 1956.
Guernsey’s officials have estimated that the historic mic could sell for anywhere from $10,000 to $100,000 US.
Other lots include:
* A bass guitar played by Paul McCartney in his Beatles days.
* A guitar played by Bruce Springsteen in the 1980s.
* A beaded glove that Michael Jackson wore during his "moonwalk" phase and personally delivered to Clark, who had asked for it.
* The harmonica Bob Dylan played in The Last Waltz.
* One of Madonna’s bustiers.
* Gold and platinum records from artists such as Beatles (for Abbey Road), the Beach Boys (for Best of the Beach Boys, Vol. 2) and Springsteen (for Born to Run ).
If you are curious, you can visit the collection at Manhattan’s Time Warner Center from Dec. 2 through Dec. 4, with the auction scheduled on Dec. 5 and 6 at the Lincoln Center in New York.
Proceeds from the bulk of the sales will go to the Bogart Pediatric Cancer Research Program, a division of the TJ Martell Foundation, which raises funds for AIDS and cancer research.
Fox News Distorting Adoption Story

MacCallum Grossly Distorts African Orphan Problem
Martha MacCallum [reporting at FOX NEWS] apparently doesn't know her way around the internet. If she did, she couldn't possibly have made the gross error that she did Tuesday (October 24, 2006) in discussing Madonna's plans to adopt a child from Africa.
I nearly said that MacCallum made a gross error while "reporting" on Madonna's plans to adopt a child from Africa, but "reporting" is too generous a term journalistically for what MacCallum was doing.
During a discussion with the "A-List" panel, MacCallum said, “There’s 900,000 orphans in Africa. This child, though, is not an orphan. His dad is living in that village.”
Had MacCallum dared to risk her manicure by using the keyboard of her computer, she could have found a search engine (try Google, Martha), typed in "Africa + orphans," and come up with any number of "hits" (FYI, Martha, that's geek talk for a list of articles that have those terms in their content, and in this case the number was 3,470,000), and then clicked on (use that little flat device that has a cord running to your computer, called a "mouse") some of them to read the information they contained about "Africa + orphans."
Had MacCallum found the time in her eight-hour work day to prepare for her one-hour show, she might have learned:
--The number of orphans in Africa is not 900,000 but upwards of 34 million, based on an estimate made in 2001 by the World Bank.
--The term "orphan" in Africa applies to children who have lost either one parent (a single orphan) or both parents (a double orphan). See the World Bank report, or any of the other 3 million Google hits on "Africa + orphans." If MacCallum didn't like the information from the World Bank, she could have chosen a website from several church-affiliated orphan organizations.
But MacCallum was not out to provide information about Africa and orphans. Had she been interested in doing that, she might have mentioned the name of the village where the child was from, instead of referring to it as "that village." She might have asked what the child was doing in an orphanage if his father could afford to take care of him.
After failing to provide accurate information, MacCallum turned to panel guest Walt Frazier, former pro basketball player, who wisely called the Madonna adoption controversy, "Much ado about nothing. I'm more concerned with the deaths that’s going on, the genocide that’s happening right now in Africa that no one is talking about rather than all this attention that Madonna is getting for trying to save one kid in Africa.
In the interests of transitioning to her next panel member, MacCallum agreed, noting "That’s a good point. It’s easy to get sucked into the celebrity story of the moment when there are so many dire situations going on with the children there." Nevertheless, she continued to be sucked into the celebrity story of the moment and went on to David Oblon, billed as a constitutional lawyer.
Oblon, whom Fox News did not describe as an expert on adoptions, said, "I think the best interests of the child is to be raised by his father. This father wants him and is able to do so.”
Whereupon MacCallum might have asked, if the father is able to take care of him, what was the child doing in an orphanage?
Fox News' agenda here is to bash any and all celebrities other than NASCAR drivers, country western singers, or actors who make movies about Jesus and make anti-semitic remarks when they are arrested for drunk driving. Fox News wants to look anti-elitist. It wants to create the impression in its viewers' minds that there is an "elite" in this country that is keeping them down and that elite is not made up of large corporations and right-wing politicians, but liberal actors and singers.

National Giving Week celebrity auction
A host of celebrities have linked up with CAF (Charities Aid Foundation) to give up items and ‘money can’t buy’ experiences in support of this year's National Giving Week.
Madonna - customised signed Dr Marten boots (Docs)
Customised signed Dr. Marten shoes, in size UK 5, or 38. These were originally part of a collection of boots customised and exhibited by celebrities and fashion designers to draw attention to World AIDS Day in 1998, and have since been exhibited all over the UK. As such the customised boots have been instrumental in raising awareness of HIV and AIDS. All proceeds raised through the auction of the boots will be used to fund the work NAT undertakes to prevent the spread of HIV, improve access to treatment and combat the stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS.
