Madonna has made her follow-up appearance for Louis Vuitton as the star of the luxury fashion label’s forthcoming autumn/winter campaign. Photographed by Steven Meisel and art directed by the designer, Marc Jacobs, Madonna is seen as a sumptuous, decadent heroine, reminiscent of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

The photographs were inspired by the photographs of the Surrealist, Man Ray, who perfected the technique of solarisation, while the rich backgrounds and lush draperies were based upon the works of Tamara de Lempicka, the Polish Art deco painter.

Madonna is seen wearing the short, ruffled silk puffballs, de luxe accessories and thigh-high boots which were a feature of Jacobs’ eclectic and extravagant autumn/winter catwalk show for Louis Vuitton in Paris in March.

And, in a reprise of her critically-acclaimed appearance at the Costume Institute Gala at The Met in New York in May, the singer is also wearing the ironic “bunny ear” headpieces which the London-based milliner, Stephen Jones designed for the collection.

“After the fun we had with the spring/summer campaign, and the amazing reaction to it, all of us – Madonna, Steven and myself – were eager to get back together for fall/winter”, said Marc Jacobs. “While the two campaigns look very different, there is also a unity about them, so it now feels like we have completed both parts of the story.”

RAY OF LIGHT: Marc Jacobs was so pleased with this spring’s Louis Vuitton campaign featuring Madonna that he was eager to do an encore. “But very quickly Marc said, ‘I want something completely different,’” related Antoine Arnault, Vuitton’s communication director.



The new ingredients included a dash of Tamara de Lempicka and a soupçon of Man Ray for color-drenched images by Steven Meisel with a surreal edge, thanks to generous use of solarization, a technique of overexposure first perfected by Ray.



“It gives something very graphic, more edgy” than the first Madonna campaign, also by Meisel, which depicted her as a French coquette in a Parisian bistro setting, Arnault said. The new spots, which break in a range of August titles, feature a variety of runway looks and leather goods, many in the house’s signature monogram.



Asked about the impact of the first Madonna campaign, Arnault said, snapping his fingers for emphasis, “Everything she was wearing in the first campaign was sold within a few months. People came into the store saying, ‘I want the Madonna bag, the Madonna shoes.”



Arnault declined to specify budgets for the fall ads, but said investments would be “flattish” versus last year. “We’re one of the rare brands to have not reduced investments,” he said.



Also slated for the second half is a new campaign devoted to the Tambour watch.

Madonna has demonstrated that she still has no reservations about showing off her body in a raunchy advertising photoshoot for fashion house Louis Vuitton.

A newly released image shows the 50-year-old singer posing provocatively in fishnet tights and Vuitton-logo underwear for a series of advertisements.
She was signed as the face of the luxury brand's spring/summer 2009 collection in what the company called an "amazing coup". The campaign was shot by Steven Meisel, who took the pictures for Madonna's infamous Sex book in 1992.
Antoine Arnault, Louis Vuitton's communications director, said: "Madonna is glamorous. She has a global image. She's the ultimate performer and businesswoman, and not someone who is just a famous singer. She has travelled. She has tried to change things."
Marc Jacobs, the label's creative director, came up with the idea of casting Madonna after seeing her perform at a concert in Paris.
"I just blurted out, 'I think we should do Madonna,'" he said. "I was totally just blown away by it, and moved by her performance, by what she had to say, and her energy."
He sent her a text asking if she would be interested and the singer replied minutes later, saying: "I'd love to." Jacobs described the campaign as "beautiful, gorgeous Madonna".
There are six images in all and the setting is a smoky French bistro, although in reality they were taken in a Los Angeles restaurant. Another shot is more tasteful, showing the singer in a 1940s-style jacket.



Newly-divorced Madonna was reportedly paid $10 million for one day's work but Arnault has denied the figure, saying the real fee was "very far away from that".

The last time Steven Meisel, Madonna and Garren had worked together was for the May 2008 Vanity Fair. Prior to that was the SEX book. Madonna thanks Garren in the back of it.

The Telegraphs features an article about Madonna's marketing ability and the lucrative contracts she signed with major companies including Vodafone, Uniliver/Sunsilk and Fuji. You can read the whole article here. Here's an excerpt:

In a move that is likely to infuriate some fans, the eagerly awaited video for 4 Minutes, with Madonna and Timberlake, will make its debut online rather than on MTV.

John Reid, the president of Warner Music Europe and vice-chairman of Warner Music International, Madonna’s label, said: "It’s not about upfront payments, it’s about selling the product. She is a very smart businesswoman who wants to sell a lot of albums.

"These companies want their customers to know about their links with Madonna. They are going to promote the deals and her music online and in extensive television, radio and press adverts."

He added: "If it all goes to plan then there is no reason why other acts shouldn’t strike similar deals."

Madonna is not the first artist to make her work available to advertisers, but past commercials have tended to feature songs only after they have been released.

Claire Beale, the editor of Campaign, the advertising industry’s trade paper said: "These deals prove that Madonna is the most marketing-savvy musician in the world. She’s a case study of what great marketing is.

"Using advertisements to promote a new single in advance of its release is very shrewd indeed."

Stuart Clarke, the talent editor of Music Week, said: "When you first hear about 4 Minutes being used for a Sunsilk campaign you think ’how tacky’. You then see the advert and you realise what a brilliant idea it is.

"It is as much an advert for her and her music as it is for the product she is supposed to be selling. No one else could get away with that."

The song 4 Minutes has already entered the UK charts at number seven on downloads alone. It is expected to enter the top five today, even though the video still has not been seen and the record has yet to released.

Gennaro Castalodo, a spokesman for HMV, said: "Madonna knows it’s not just about reaching her own fans, who are going to buy the record anyway."
