Raising Malawi: Madonna open letter and video to her fans!
Category: Charity.

My life has been changed. I must share my story with you.

It all began seven years ago when I learned of a small country in Africa called Malawi. Over one million children in this country have been orphaned by AIDS and extreme poverty. Children have been left raising children. Learn more by watching the video message I created for you and discover my interest and concern for Malawi:

Watch a video message from me about Malawi

The moment I realized the impact I could have on these children, my life was transformed. With the smallest actions, I have witnessed enormous change -- and I'd like to give you the opportunity to help others in need and experience the same kind of fulfillment.

Sign up and join our movement to raise Malawi. I'll send ten (10) people who sign up this week an autographed copy of my documentary film, I Am Because We Are -- a movie that will change your life.

http://www.raisingmalawi.org/MadonnaDVD

Michael Berg and I founded Raising Malawi to bring an end to the extreme poverty and hardship endured by Malawi's orphans and vulnerable children. We have partnered with organizations working with the local communities in Malawi. Rather than simply providing aid, we're empowering Malawians with the tools they need to shape their own destiny.

Despite the unimaginable conditions, there is a hope and a determination in the people of Malawi that is nothing short of contagious. It's the spirit of Malawians that keeps me coming back.

I invite you to share in the joy of Raising Malawi. Stories and updates from this small African nation will inspire you and offer a personal connection to the people I call my heroes and friends.

Please sign up now, and you could receive a signed copy of our DVD:

Together, we will raise Malawi.

Love,

Madonna

P.S. Donate today to Raising Malawi and I will match your gift, doubling its impact.

Salvatore Ferragamo joines forces with Madonna and friends to raise money for L'Aquila.

[BREAKING NEWS] Broadcasts of I AM BECAUSE WE ARE on Time Warner Cable now!
Category: Charity.

BREAKING NEWS - I AM BECAUSE WE ARE, the extraordinary documentary film from Raising Malawi co-founder Madonna and director Nathan Rissman, is currently available for North American viewing from Time Warner Cable television. It is featured as a FREE selection listed in the Sundance section of all subscribers’ On-Demand programming.

The much-acclaimed work, written and produced by Madonna, takes a hard look at the plight of Malawi’s one-million-plus orphan children, and demands an end to the cycle of disease and endemic poverty that has too long trapped the developing world. Culled from her own journal entries, Madonna’s narration makes for a powerful call-to-action even as it tells a very personal story of discovery and transformation.

The film’s title is inspired by the spirit of Ubuntu, a concept in African spirituality which maintains that the very existence of every human individual is defined by, and dependent upon, the happiness and well-being of another. It means that however many we may be, it is a single global village to which we all belong.

An impressive roster of social, spiritual, and government leaders including Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Professor Jeffrey Sachs, and President Bill Clinton contribute to the discussion of the global interconnections that define us all, and the responsibility we must take for one another.

I AM BECAUSE WE ARE bears witness to the complex and harrowing hardships of life in Malawi. It also celebrates the miracles being made there every day. Across the greatest of distances and against seemingly insurmountable odds, a few remarkable individuals are making great change for some of the world’s most vulnerable children.

“It is my hope that this extraordinary film will inspire and motivate people all over the world to join us in saving the lives of Malawi’s impoverished children, and improving our entire global village in the process,” says Raising Malawi Executive Director Philippe van den Bossche.

Keep on voting for Raising Malawi!
Category: Charity.

Raising Malawi is still winning, holding the top since Monday. But you have to keep on voting!!

Madonna just posted the message below on her Myspace.

Malawi is a beautiful country that has been absolutely devastated by disease, poverty, and insufficient resources. An entire generation of Malawian parents has been wiped out, and countless children continue to suffer and die needlessly every day.

But when I look at the people of Malawi, I don’t see a poor nation’s many problems. I see tremendous possibility. When I look into the eyes of the children there, I don’t see the mistakes of previous generations, I see the future of our world.

That’s why I’m asking you to join Raising Malawi and become an ambassador for Malawi’s children. Saving them means nothing less than rescuing our collective future.

We have no time to waste. Vote for Raising Malawi right now, and help save lives.

Latest from Raising Malawi.
Category: Charity.

A few weeks ago we talked about this charity activity.

Read what Raising Malawi is reporting now:

The truth is that hundreds of Malawi’s one million orphan children die from preventable illnesses every day.

The dare was for Madonna fans to do something about it at a one-time screening of Truth or Dare benefiting Raising Malawi at Toronto’s Bloor Cinema.

On Canada’s Election Day, October14th, eTalk television’s Elaine Lui, joined event presenter Iain Christiansen to host CARE TO TRUTH OR DARE, a benefit for Raising Malawi. The screening of Madonna’s classic documentary drew an enthusiastic and generous crowd including stars of Degrassi: The Next Generation, Adamo Ruggiero and Lauren Collins. In addition to enjoying what has become the sixth-highest grossing documentary of all time, fans were treated to an exclusive preview of Madonna’s directorial debut, Filth And Wisdom.

In organizing the event, Iain Christiansen took a cue from Madonna’s ability to enlighten and entertain all at once. Inspired by her work with Raising Malawi and SFK, Iain wanted a way to celebrate Madonna’s current tour while doing some good in the world. A nostalgic look back at Blond Ambition seemed just the ticket.

After coordinating with Raising Malawi and securing permission from Miramax Films, Iain had a mere four days to publicize his event. He quickly organized a grassroots team to create publicity. Food and beverages were donated, radio ad time secured. Flyers encouraged people to vote in Canada’s national election before attending the screening. A very reasonable fifteen-dollar suggested donation would guarantee that anyone who cared to support Raising Malawi could afford to attend.

On Tuesday October 14th at 8pm, a video montage about Raising Malawi featuring a call to action from Madonna welcomed an excited audience to the Bloor Cinema. After a ten-minute sneak preview of Filth And Wisdom, it was time to play Truth Or Dare. The 1991 documentary chronicles the life of Madonna behind the scenes of her Blond Ambition World Tour. Everyone had a blast.

The day after the screening, Iain was still feeling elated. Individual donations had ranged from fifteen dollars to five hundred bucks. Servers donated their tips. More than $3,000 had been raised for Raising Malawi, and contributions are still coming in.

Congratulations, Iain, and thank you!

Iain Christiansen is raising Malawi. Now it’s your turn. Let us know what you’re doing to raise Malawi.

Thanks to all of the CARE TO TRUTH OR DARE sponsors including Laineygossip.com, The Bloor Cinema, Paupers Pub, Proud FM (103.9 FM), Sans Blah and Toronto’s Barclay Jewelry.

Madonna 'to be given Malawi citizenship in thanks for her work'

She has homes in the US and Britain and now it seems the Queen of Pop has a new land. Malawi is said to be making Madonna an honourary citizen in recognition for her work there.

As well as adopting her son David from the African country, the Four Minutes singer funds several orphanages in the land, feeding and educating thousands of youngsters. Caring Madonna is also setting up a girls' school to help the underprivileged.

"We are proud as a country to be associated with such a megastar," Billy Kaunda, Malawi's deputy tourism and culture minister, was reported as saying.

"She will have freedom of all cities here. She won't be bothered with issues like visas and other limitations."

Earlier this week, Madonna's documentary on Malawi, I Am Because We Are, premiered in Cannes to great acclaim.

Madonna and Sharon Stone at this year amfAR party in Cannes.
Category: Charity.

Madonna and Sharon Stone prove again that when it comes to red carpet glitz and glamour, older really is wiser.

The dynamic duo pulled out all the stops last night at the annual amfAR party in Cannes - with very different looks.

And with a combined age of 99 between them, the leading ladies showed the younger stars at Cannes they still have what it takes when it comes to setting the red carpet alight.

Sharon, 50 wore a sexy leopard print Cavalli gown and draped herself over a red Porsche for the assembled photographers.

Meanwhile Madonna - who is one year younger - opted for a more demur and mature look in a long sleeved pink Christian Dior dress.

After dazzling at Cannes on Wednesday night, the two stars again stole the limelight, despite the presence of sexy stars who are well below half their ages.

Madonna is approaching her 50th birthday in August, while Sharon already welcomed her sixth decade in March.

On Wednesday, Madonna lapped up the attention at the world première of the singer’s Malawi AIDS orphans documentary I Am Because We Are.

And when asked whether she would be adopting another child from Malawi and replied: "Yes, I hope so."

In 2006, Madonna and husband Guy Ritchie adopted David Banda, now two, from Malawi.

Yesterday, the singer compared the criticism they received at the time to birthing pains.

She said: "I was meant to have him and it was a big struggle and I didn’t understand [the criticism] but in the end I rationalised that when a woman has a child and has a natural childbirth she suffers an enormous amount.

"I went through my own birthing pains ... in the end it made me stronger so I can’t complain."

Meanwhile following in Madonna’s choice of dress colour Swedish model Victoria Silvstedt sizzled in a stunning and very revealing tight pink number.

Actress Natalie Portman looked a picture of elegance in an off the shoulder puffy white dress.

Also attending the star-studded event was American rapper P Diddy, Cliff Richard and Denis Hopper.

Dita Von Teese opted for a bright purple dress by Gautier couture while Donatella Versace was a special guest on Madonna’s table during the charity evening and wore a pale green dress by her own label.

On Wednesday, Madonna and Sharon’s gowns and looks drew several parallels.

From their choice of black gowns, their pink lips and smoky eyes down to their darkened roots, onlookers were startled by the similarities between the two women.

Their remarkably youthful complexions isn’t the only thing they share.

Both are mothers of three and have gone down the adoption route of parenthood - Sharon has three adopted boys, while Madonna attracted controversy for her adoption of David.

Both women have been married twice - albeit one, Madonna, is still wed to her second husband.

After a failed marriage to actor Sean Penn - who is head juror at this year’s festival - in the 1980s, Madonna married British director Guy Ritchie in 2000 and the couple have a seven-year-old Rocco together, as well as Madonna’s daughter Lourdes, 11, from a previous relationship.

Sharon split from second husband, San Francisco Chronicle editor Phil Bronstein in 2004, and was previously wed to film producer Michael Greenburg for three years in the mid 1980s.

Madonna’s 1993 flop thriller Body Of Evidence, co-starring Willem Dafoe, was widely compared to Sharon’s most famous role, opposite Michael Douglas, in Basic Instinct the previous year.

After stepping out earlier in the week in kinky boots and leather gloves, Madonna went for the more refined look in a stunning Chanel black and white beaded gown with fringed sleeves and trim.

The Material Girl, 49, made her entrance at the screening with Guy, who looked remarkably glum next to his excited wife.

Madonna and Sharon are teaming up tonight to raise money at the AmFAR Cinema Against AIDS fundraiser, which auctions off items for an AIDS charity.

Last year as compere, Sharon raised £3.5million at the annual Cannes aids benefit.

Stone is on the French Riviera to promote her new film No Subtitles Necessary: Laszlo & Vilmos, which screens tomorrow.
