A Madonna Obsession On Stage
Category: Theatre.
London, Nov 22 (ANI): Actress Sadie Frost is to appear on the West End 23 years after her last stage appearance. The former wife of actor Jude Law will star in Touched… For The Very First Time, a one-woman play set in 1980s Manchester at the Trafalgar Studios in February. Frost plays a character called Lesley, who becomes obsessed with Madonna after hearing the song Like A Virgin as a teenager, reports BBC. The title of the play is taken from a line in the song, although Madonna has not endorsed the production. It is Frost’’s first stage role since 1986, when she appeared in Mumbo Jumbo at Manchester’’s Royal Exchange Theatre. Touched… For The Very First Time opens on 4 February, 2009 for a limited run

Lucky Star – Madonna at 50: A Birthday Celebration
Category: Theatre.

From broadwayworld.com:

Melissa Young goes from “Redheaded Broadway” to “Blonde Ambition!” Melissa Young in Lucky Star – Madonna at 50: A Birthday Tribute brings original takes on an original artist at Davenports Piano Bar and Cabaret located at 1383 N. Milwaukee Avenue, Chicago, Thursdays August 7, 14, 21, and 28, 2008 at 8:00PM and Saturday April 16 at 8 PM at the Duplex Piano Bar and Cabaret in New York City. Melissa Young, has been performing in and around Chicago for over 11 years and is delighted to be presenting her newest solo cabaret performance about the woman who has taught her time and again about breaking the societal mold of what a female should and can be. Learning to make her own rules and follow in her idols foot steps is where Melissa’s passion originated and for that, she always gives credit to Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone. Brass, sass, and a willingness to show her ass (as she did this past June for a Season of Concern benefit concert) is how Melissa Young lives... thanks to inspiration from Madonna. In Lucky Star – Madonna at 50: A Birthday Tribute, Young performs the music of America’s most original artist, Madonna, in celebration of her 50th birthday on August 16 of this year. Over 20 of Madonna’s songs get a musical makeover through American musical idioms. Lucky Star is a tribute show that dares to ask such musical questions as: What if Madonna met Disney to revamp “Papa Don’t Preach?” or if the next hit show on Broadway was Material Girl: the musical? Jazz, Country, Swing, and even Raggae all meet Madonna, America’s most loved and hated pop icon. Darly Nitz, co-creator of the longest running cabaret show in Chicago history (The Nitz & Howe Experience) as well as the “best party in town” directs, with Mark Burnell, a long-time Chicago pianist–in and out of the jazz and cabaret world–plays and musical directs. Nick Green of The Chicago Reader has said "Melissa Young ensures that the show is open, inviting and an awful lot of fun." Kennette Crockett of the Windy City Times has said of Melissa's performance in BackStage Theatre Company's dirty summertime revue Everything's Sexy, "Melissa Young possesses all the passion and sharpness that one expects of the work." Interviewed many times over by Lawrence Bommer and Nina Metz for The Chicago Reader, The Chicago Sun Times and The Chicago Tribune, Melissa Young repeatedly woos Chicago audiences with her wit and fast paced humor. Melissa Young, a proud member of the Chicago Cabaret Professionals, has had the pleasure of working with many off-loop theater companies, as well as starred with 1981 Miss America Susan Powell and Broadway's Nat Chandler in Show Stoppers at the Valentine Theater in Toledo, Ohio. Tickets for Lucky Star at Davenports are $15 with a 2 drink minimum. For information and reservations, call (773) 278-1830. More information can also be found at www.melissayoung.com.

Short run for ''Desperately Seeking Susan'' in London.
Category: Theatre.

After weeks of desperately seeking an audience, producers have pulled the plug on "Desperately Seeking Susan."

Producers announced Friday that the stage adaptation of the 1985 Madonna movie will close Dec. 15, a month after its opening night. It had been taking bookings until April.

The show, which sets the movie’s story of mistaken identity to the punk-pop songs of Blondie, drew scathing reviews when it opened at London’s Novello Theatre, and has struggled to sell tickets.

"Despite fantastic performances and enthusiastic audiences, the ticket sales have not been sufficient and the producers have had to make the difficult decision to close the show," producers said in a statement.

Jessica Alba in Speed The Plow
Category: Theatre.
Actress Jessica Alba is set to take the stage on Broadway next year. Alba is said to be in talks to star in a production of David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow.

Alba will play Karen, a role that was played by Madonna back in 1998.

Alba told Regis and Kelly, "I have been asked. It's perfect timing because of the strike. There might be an actor's strike in June. So if they don't resolve, I can do theater."

"I'm still shocked that Madonna played that role, I never knew she did Broadway."

''Desperately Seeking Susan'': Rosanna Arquette amoung the audience at the Novello Theatre in London.
Category: Theatre.

Big hair, pop hits and extreme outfits were back with a bang in new musical Desperately Seeking Susan.

The show brings the classic Eighties movie which starred Madonna and Rosanna Arquette to the London stage.

Familiar faces in the audience at the Novello Theatre included Rosanna Arquette, model Caprice, actress Sarah Parish, choreographer Arlene Phillips and author Kathy Lette.

The original film featured Arquette as a bored housewife who becomes mixed up with bad girl Susan (Madonna).

Arquette, who has since branched out into directing, praised the show as "really fun".

"I was pleasantly surprised," she said. "Sometimes you think, ’Oh, how are they going to take a movie and put it on stage?’ It moves, it’s funny, there’s dancing - it works really well."

She said of Kelly Price, who plays her character Roberta in the stage production: "I thought, ’Oh wow, that’s great’. She has her own fresh way of doing it."

Making the movie was an exciting experience for the cast, Arquette said.

"We had a great time. She (Madonna) was just exploding when we made the movie and overnight ... literally she blew up in the six weeks that we made that film. It was incredible to watch and, I think, intense for her. It’s really been fun to watch her through the years and see how she’s evolved."

In adapting the film to the stage, the production has pushed the 1985 setting back to 1979 and added music by Blondie - plus a new song co-written by Debbie Harry. Kelly Price and Emma Williams star respectively as leads Roberta and Susan in the musical.

Susan Goes On Stage
Category: Theatre.

 whatsonstage.com

Preparations are revving up for the screen-to-stage adaptation of Desperately Seeking Susan . We hear that the new musical, which sets the 1985 film to the greatest hits of Blondie, is aiming to be on Shaftesbury Avenue well before the end of the year, with Emma Williams playing the title role created on screen by Madonna. Williams – along with other West End regulars including Kelly Price, Simon Lipkin, Clive Rowe and Neil McDermott – took part in a workshop of the new piece late last year. Now she’s back in the rehearsal room for another three weeks’ development. Set in 1979, Desperately Seeking Susan centres on bored New Jersey housewife Roberta Glass who spots a personal ad entitled “Desperately Seeking Susan” and heads off to Manhattan in search of the exciting Susan herself. Things get complicated when, after buying Susan’s jacket, Roberta is knocked unconscious. Awaking with amnesia, she assumes she is Susan, who is also being desperately sought by the mob. In addition to Madonna, the film starred Rosanna Arquette and Aidan Quinn. Amongst the Blondie hits included in the stage version are “Hanging on the Telephone”, “The Tide Is High”, “Heart of Glass”, “Call Me”, “Rapture” and “One Way or Another”.

Drowned Madonna is glad to announce a brand new play to be staged at the Union Theatre in London for three weeks from April 2007.

The play has been written by a Madonna fan since the beginning. "In 1987 I went to see the Who’s that Girl? World Tour. I was hooked," the playwriter Tommy Kearney told Drowned Madonna. "Now twenty years later, I’ve written a play called ’Madonna and Me’."

[Rumours] Madonna Cast as the Witch in London ''Into the Woods'' Benefit?
Category: Theatre.

BREAKING NEWS - For two charity performances, pop icon Madonna will take on the role of the Witch in the Royal Albert Hall's gala benefit performance of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Into the Woods, which will be presented on Sunday, October 22nd at 3 PM and 7:30 PM.

Into the Woods will also star Joanna Riding as Little Red and Olivier Award-winner Laura Michelle Kelly (Mary Poppins) as Cinderella.  Other previously announced cast members include Anita Dobson and Vinnie Jones.

With music and lyrics by Sondheim and a book by Lapine, Into The Woods "combines classic fairy tales into a story about 'the complications of living in modern society and the difficult choices we encounter on the paths of our lives'. The stories - including Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, and Rapunzel - are joined with a new creation; the tale of The Baker and His Wife," according to Royal Albert notes.  The show premiered on Broadway in November 1987 and ran for 765 performances at the Martin Beck Theatre.  Lapine and Sondheim--as well as actress Joanna Gleason--won Tonys for their work.

Peter Penny and Paul Savident will produce the event for The Childrens' Society.

The chameleonic Madonna has been a cultural icon for over two decades.  A multi-Grammy Award-winner, she has sold more than 200 million albums worldwide.  Her stage credits include Speed-the-Plow on Broadway, as well as (more recently) Up for Grabs in London.  She also won acclaim for taking on the title role in the 1996 film version of Evita, and previously performed songs by Sondheim in Dick Tracy.  Other film credits include Swept Away, The Next Best Thing, Body of Evidence, Shadows and Fog and Desperately Seeking Susan.

Neurotica Returns for 3 shows only!

NEUROTICA RETURNS for 3 SHOWS ONLY! Thursday, August 24th at 10:30 p.m. Friday, August 25th at 10:30 p.m. Saturday, August 26th at 10:30 p.m.

Neurotica also features Rob Maitner (back-up vocals), Jerry Smith (percussion), Jonathan Tomaselli (back-up vocals) and Matt Wigton (bass).

John Hoglund of Back Stage Magazine says Gurland’s Neurotica is “one of the most exciting outings of the season” and that “Gurland is in better voice than ever and everything he sings is fully realized...he illuminates the stage with a vibrant presence that is sexy, funny, and sensual. Much like Madonna, Gurland pushes peoples buttons, reinvents the norm—and it all works." HX Magazine raves that Gurland “beautifully proves that the songs written by and for Madonna are every bit as well-crafted, smart and emotionally searching as any “golden age” showtune, while throwing in teasing hints of camp and trashy queer sexuality. His high, soaring tenor powerfully conveys Maddie’s landscapes of desire and regret, joy and fear." "The combination of Gurland’s terrific voice and Holland’s fabulous arrangements proved relevatory." David Hurst, Next Magazine.
