Here are a few select quotes:
What were the first shows you saw?
My first concert was David Bowie at Cobo Hall [in Detroit] when I was 15. He had mime artists with him. It was amazing. I wish I could have seen him as Ziggy Stardust. My second show was Elton John, and my third was Bob Mar- ley. Not bad, right?
Not bad at all. Did you drink at the shows?
When I was in high school? No way. I was a geek. I didn’t really have a drink until I got divorced the first time [from Sean Penn], when I was 30.
Did you do graffiti?
Walls, subways, sidewalks . . .
What was your tag?
Boy Toy.
No shit! Who came up with Boy Toy?
It could have been Futura. He’s clever. He painted the whole inside of my bed- room on 99th, which my landlord was not happy about. We had a little gang – [the actress] Debbie Mazur was part of it. We called ourselves the Webo Girls – like hue- vos, girls with balls.
When you were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, there was a video montage of your career. When you took the stage you made a joke about “all my bad hairstyles.” Which Madonna fashion era do you look back on with the most disdain?
I think it was the purple lipstick, fluorescent-green sweater combo. So many of those hairstyles. It’s OK, it was the Eighties. It was a bad-hairstyle era, let’s face it.
On the flip side, is there a time you look back on when you say, “Fuck, I was pretty hot.”
Like I’m going to admit to that! And be annihilated for the next 10 years for it? I’m not answering that one.
Did you have the sense that [“Like a Virgin” and “Material Girl”] would become such huge hits?
No. They just resonated with me. I’ve never been a good judge of what things are going to be huge or not. The songs that I think are the most retarded songs I’ve written, like “Cherish” and “Sorry,” a pretty big hit off my last album, end up being the biggest hits. “Into the Groove” is another song I feel retarded singing, but everybody seems to like it.
Has anyone ever turned down an offer to work with you?
Sure. Or it’s, “I don’t have time.” I wanted to work with Eminem. I don’t think he wanted to work with me. [Smiles] Maybe he’s shy.
You and Lourdes, who is now 12, went to a Lady Gaga show together in New York. Do the two of you go to a lot of shows?
We’ve just started. We like the same music. I think Lady Gaga is great. When we saw her, I actually felt a kind of recognition. I thought, “She’s got something.” There’s something quirky about her. She’s fearless and funny, and when she spoke to the audience, she sounded intelligent and clever. She’s unique.
Can you sense an artist’s ambition?
Yes. There’s people like Justin Timberlake, who’s really good-looking and laid back. He’s sort of a Cary Grant. I love him, I love working with him, but I don’t recog- nize myself in him. But I can see myself in Lady Gaga. In the early part of my career, for sure. When I saw her, she didn’t have a lot of money for her production, she’s got holes in her fishnets, and there’s mistakes everywhere. It was kind of a mess, but I can see that she’s got that It factor. It’s nice to see that at a raw stage.
Last year, you and Guy Ritchie got divorced . . .
You don’t have to lower your voice when you say that. It’s not a bad word. I thought we were talking about music, though. If you can connect the idea of divorce to music, I’ll talk to you about it.
Then let’s talk about the lyrics to “Devil Wouldn’t Recognize You” from “Hard Candy”: “I should just walk away/Over and over, I keep on coming back for more.”
What can you say? It was a challenging year. I think work saved me, and I’m very grateful that I had work to do. I may have thrown myself off a building. Life is an adjustment. It’s different. My sons aren’t with me right now, they’re with their father, and I’m not very comfortable with the idea of my children not living together. There are pros and cons, but I feel good now.

Forbes: Madonna Is The #1 Earning Musician
Category: Magazines.
From Forbes:
The Year's Top-Earning Musicians
by Lauren Streib, 06.22.09, 03:00 PM EDT
Thanks to her tour and endorsements, Madonna made more than anyone else in music over the last 12 months.
It's time to stop lamenting the dearth of digital and physical album sales. Even in today's economy, musicians--at least top acts--are making more money than ever.
Consider Madonna. According to Forbes earnings estimates, the incomparable Material Girl, who tops our list, has hovered between $40 million and $50 million dollars in annual earnings since 2002. In the last year, a sold-out worldwide tour, impressive international sales of her latest album, Hard Candy, and lucrative endorsement deals put her earnings at $110 million.
Another standout is Celine Dion, who comes in second. Ten years ago, she landed on the Forbes Celebrity 100 list with earnings of $55.5 million. This year, the first year of her return to the road after a three-year stint in Las Vegas, she earned an estimated $100 million, landing at the second spot on our list. Last year, she grossed $237 million on tour, released her first English greatest-hits collection, My Love: Essential Collection, and added a sixth perfume to her fragrance collection.
In the last 12 months, the top 10 musicians earned a combined $719 million, up from $500 million during the same period ending June 2008. The main reason for the industry's lucrative adjustment: big shows at steep prices. According to concert industry analyst Pollstar, 10 single shows grossed more than $10 million in 2008 (Madonna at Madison Square Garden, Billy Joel at Shea Stadium, Celine Dion at Montreal's Bell Centre, etc). In 2007, only four shows had reached that level.
Ticket prices climbed $5.26 dollars on average, to $67.33, the biggest single-year increase in 15 years. As a result, gross revenue for the top 100 touring acts was up 6.5% year over year, to $2.4 billion, though there were 5% fewer shows. For big-ticket acts that can fill international arenas, selling a single concert ticket now earns them $20 on average, while selling one physical album puts just $1 in their coffers. Of course, musicians also benefit from merchandise sales while on tour.
To compile the list of the year's top-earning musicians, we considered earnings from album sales, touring, publishing and endorsement deals during the period from June 2008 to June 2009. Sources include Billboard, Pollstar, and Nielsen SoundScan.
The list has a preponderance of established acts. Bruce Springsteen and AC/DC have been recording and touring for over three decades. The Eagles returned after a 20-year recording hiatus. These expansive careers produce fans of all ages that can fill thousands of seats per gig and a large catalog of hits that keep shows eventful.
Beyonce Knowles came in third, earning $87 million. In the last year, Queen B dropped a double album, starred in two films, performed at both the Oscars and a Presidential Inaugural Ball and embarked on what is expected to be, at minimum, a 110-date international tour. She also expanded a fashion collection that includes casual and formal lines as well as jewelry and eyeglasses, and added sponsors Nintendo, Crystal Geyser and General Mills to a roster of endorsers already including L'Oréal, Giorgio Armani and Samantha Thavasa handbags.
The act with the least experience on the list is Rascal Flatts, whose first album was released in 2000. But, like other relatively new acts on the list, they've mastered the art and science of the modern superstar that is more brand than band. With a JCPenney clothing line in the works, significant crossover appeal and endorsement deals, they recognize how to capitalize on their popularity, unfettered by the economic threats to their industry and the economy.

$110 million
Thanks to her "Sticky & Sweet Tour," the top-grossing international and domestic tour of 2008 according to Pollstar, Madonna out earned the rest of her peers. She also released her 11th studio album, Hard Candy, which debuted at No.1 in over 30 countries. In the U.S., the album sold 100,000 copies on the first day of release. The Material Girl also endorses Louis Vuitton.

More details on W magazine!

"The layout, shot by top fashion photographer Steven Klein, shows Her Madgesty, 50, half-naked in black lingerie, straddling one stud on a hotel bed while being attended by three other pleasure-givers, one of whom barely conceals his manhood with a towel.
Although not as explicit as her X-rated 1992 book, "Sex," the shoot marks Madonna's return to the sort of arty raunch she abandoned when she married British director Guy Ritchie and took on the airs of an English countrywoman.
The W portfolio, headlined "Blame it On Rio," gives prominent play to Luz, who reportedly accompanied Madonna to the Maldives in December. Last week, he was seen with her in New York, where he's said to have dined with the Material Mom and her children.
Asked about the nature of Madonna's relationship with Luz, her rep, Liz Rosenberg, said, "I'm told they're kind of friends." "

Madonna 'gives £32million' to Guy Ritchie.
Category: Magazines.
From the Daily Mail:
Madonna will give Guy Ritchie a £32 million divorce pay-off after he signed away rights to her £300million fortune, it was claimed today.
The singer will reportedly give the film director £12million in cash and hand over the keys to a country estate worth £20million.
It understood that Ritchie, 40, will also keep his £3million Punchbowl pub under the deal which was finalised after the couple’s ‘quicky’ High Court divorce on November 21.
Ritchie was entitled to claim up to half the wealth earned during their seven-and-a-half year marriage, thought to be £120 million.
But the director - who thought to be worth £30million thanks to movies such as Snatch and RocknRolla – said he did not want any of her money.
It is thought the £12 million offer came after the 50-year-old ‘Queen of Pop’ refused to split their marital home in Marylebone, west London.
A source told The News of the World: ‘He is getting one lump sum imminently.
‘Guy wanted to stay in their London home but Madonna refused to split it in two, and eventually gave him £12 million as compensation.'
She 'decided early on' that he should get Ashcombe House in Withshire, the source added.
Madonna petitioned for divorce on the grounds of 40-year-old Ritchie’s ‘unreasonable behaviour’, which she said was ‘continuing’ but not affecting her health.
The couple will share custody of their sons, Rocco, eight, and three-year-old adopted David.
Madonna’s 12-year-old daughter Lourdes, from a previous relationship, is expected to live in America with her mother.
The couple married in Scotland in December 2000 in Skibo Castle.
