Drowned Madonna: Welcome at DrownedMadonna.com. We are very honoured to chat with you.

Stereo MC's: Oh Thanks.

DM: What you were hearing when you grew up has an impact on what you are today artistically. So, we'd like to go back on your teens. What did you hear then?

Stereo MC's:
Grew up hearing rock Lled Zep, Free and all that and then punk to electro to Hip Hop.

DM: And who were your idols?

Stereo MC's:
The Clash, Sex Pistols, Bob Marley, Sly and Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix, Kraftwerk, Sugarhil Gang etc.

DM: What about today that music scene has changed and your taste is evolved?

Stereo MC's: Same plus so many more from all the great Rap and Hip Hop that’s been made in the last 15 years, to electronic music from Tribe Called Quest to Aphex Twin to Dizzy Rascal - too many to mention.

DM: When did your charming journey through the music land start?

Stereo MC's: Around 1987.

DM: Why did you decide to call the band Stereo MC's?

Stereo MC's: We made a record and didn't have a name and got that one night and went with it.

DM: Music critics wrote many lines about Stereo MC's, but we'd like to know what you would say to describe the Stereo MC's...

Stereo MC's: A couple of guys who love making music.

DM: People can enjoy your final productions, but unfortunately cannot enjoy the creative process. Let's talk about you in the studio... Who has the louder voice in the studio?

Stereo MC's: Visitors. [laughing].

DM: That's good!... Are you versed on everything?

Stereo MC's: We just play what we need to get the music down. We're not super musicians but can do enough to get what we need.

DM: What are your inspirations?

Stereo MC's: Energy of music, life going on around you, great records.

DM: Are you free to explore new ideas or your recording company gives you specific directions?

Stereo MC's: We pretty much do what we're going to do if they don't like it we'll say OK but it doesn't really work for us making music to someone else’s specification.

DM: Great, that's why your music is unique and personal. So you can also go out of bounds and done your own thing entirely, regardless of what they want?

Stereo MC's: Usually we just do what we do, labels usually confuse things.

DM: We know that you have your own studio. Take us there... try to describe it...

Stereo MC's: We've our own place in Brixton South London. We've got Technology, table football, records, light. It’s a studio, but it's more than a studio.

DM: Besides doing your own records, you also do remixes for other artists. Is listening and remixing other people music helpful somehow? Is it a sort of inspiration for your own stuff?

Stereo MC's: Yes its fuel for the fire…for inspiration.

DM: Is your approach to remixing different from the approach to the production of your own songs?

Stereo MC's: It's different cause the song writing is more important and really the hardest part.

DM: As for remixing, is testing the crowd and playing a remix in a club helpful?

Stereo MC's: Sometimes... depends what else is going on at the time, but yeah it can give you a vibe.

DM: How many remixes have you done?

Stereo MC's: Maybe 50 or so, not that many really 'cause Stereo MC's is a group, making our own music is our main thing.

DM: What does it feel like on performing live?

Stereo MC's: Scary but exciting.

DM: Do you prefer to play live or work in the studio for new stuff?

Stereo MC's: Both Different both great, when you are touring for a while you wanna get back to the studio and when your in the studio too long you just wanna play live.

DM: You made an amazing remix of Madonna’s "Frozen". Can you tell us the creative process?

Stereo MC's: Rob had a vibe on the drums and b-line and we went with it from there.

DM: Were you free to do what you wanted with "Frozen"?

Stereo MC's: Yes. I think Madonna liked a mix we'd done for Tricky and asked us on the back of that..

DM: Did Madonna give you some idea?

Stereo MC's: She called us up cause we'd used the wrong take of vocal I think but that was it she seemed cool.

DM: Madonna reworked your remix for her Drowned World Tour. Did she contact you during the rehearsals of the show?

Stereo MC's:
Someone called us asking for the parts from the track but they'd gone missing, so they must have figured it out somehow.

DM: Is "Frozen" the one and only Madonna’s song you have remixed?

Stereo MC's: Yes.

DM:
How many different remixes of this song did you make?

Stereo MC's:
Just the vocal and instrumental I think... and maybe a longer version.

DM: Have you ever met Madonna?

Stereo MC's: No.

DM: Do you like to collaborate with other artists?

Stereo MC's: We work with different artists all the time not necessary famous yet, but it's all inspiring.

DM: Are there still people with whom you haven't worked yet that are on your Wish List?

Stereo MC's:
There’s lots of people making great music, we prefer to leave those things in the lap of the Gods.

DM: Great Britain is a cutting-edge music lab. Which are your favourite brand new British artists?

Stereo MC's: People like Roots Manuva and Skinnyman.

DM: Let’s talk about “Retroactive”

Stereo MC's:
This was just a collection of our tracks from 4 LP's

DM:
What projects are you currently working on?

Stereo MC's:
We're finishing our new LP called 'Paradise' which will be out in August with a couple of singles before that. And we're starting to tour at the end of June.

DM: Are you going to embrace new sounds?

Stereo MC's: We always try to keep it fresh.

DM: We already asked it to Barry Harris... If you weren't working in the music business, what would you be doing with your life?

Stereo MC's: Impossible to imagine, probably just bum around experiencing life and avoiding stress of everyday living.

DM: Thank you so much Guys. Chatting with you has been a great pleasure. Keep on making great music!
