Britney Spears’ manager talks about the story behind the Madonna VMAs kiss.
It was 2003, during the VMAs. Madonna, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Missy Elliott performed a medley of Like A Virgin, Hollywood and Work It, with a double-kiss between the queen of pop and the two young popstars.
It passed into the annals of music history especially the one between Madonna and Britney because the cameraman, shortly after, focused on Justin Timberlake, instead of continuing to shoot the scene, and nearly lost the second kiss with Aguilera.
Larry Rudolph, Britney’s longtime manager, interviewed by Billboard talks about what happened leading up the infamous kiss, and how Madonna thanked him after “that kiss happened and the world exploded.” (you can watch the video above)
Madonna had been very, very, very rigid about the rehearsals. She was telling Britney and I every day. Be here tomorrow at 10 o’clock. She would never address me by name, she would just say: You make sure Britney’s here tomorrow at 10 o’clock. Not wanting to upset one of the biggest stars of all time.
After the performance, Rudolph was in an elevator with Madonna, and it turns out she remembered his name. Larry adds:
She wrapped her arms around my waist and gave me a big kiss on the lips, And she said: You see Larry, it was all worth it.
And she was totally right. Let’s watch again the amazing performance:
