10. EVITA, 1996
As the tragic Eva Perón, Madonna made audiences cry in 1996’s Evita. Dressed in decadent costumes inspired by real-life looks by Christian Dior and Elsa Schiaparelli, the movie became a couture classic for fashion fans.
9. HUNG UP, 2005
Forming something of a comeback, the 2005 hit Hung Up featured Madonna putting on her leotard and leggings for an athletic romp in a dance studio. The video, with its on-trend style and slick dance moves, made sure Madonna was still as relevant as ever.
8. IN LOUIS VUITTON AT THE MET GALA, 2009
Never one to shy away from a rule-breaking outfit, Madonna went for a full Louis Vuitton look for the 2009 Met Gala – complete with bunny ears fresh from the runway. Designed for her by Marc Jacobs himself, the eccentric look made sure Madge grabbed headlines.
7. PAPA DON’T PREACH, 1986
In Papa Don’t Preach, Madonna went for a new look, opting for a tomboyish look as she struts around NYC. The song caused controversy on its release, but the video cemented Madonna’s status as a pop icon.
6. EROTICA, 1992
Madonna waltzed back into public notoriety with Erotica, her 1992 album accompanied by Sex, a coffee table book of intimate photographs by Steven Meisel. The video saw her get in touch with her racier side, in typically scandalous Madonna fashion.
5. KISSING BRITNEY SPEARS, 2003
At 2003’s VMAs, Madonna and Britney Spears proved just how powerful a kiss can be. The world watched as the pair smooched on stage during a medley of hits, and the kiss found its place in pop history.
4. MATERIAL GIRL, 1985
Playing up her Marilyn Monroe vibe, Material Girl sees Madonna mimic Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend, the number from Monroe’s 1953 film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. A strapless pink gown, matching gloves and plenty of sparkling diamonds complete the homage.
3. BLOND AMBITION TOUR, 1990
Jean Paul Gaultier took the task of designing costumes for Madonna’s 1990 world tour seriously, and his efforts paid off – the Blond Ambition tour saw that now-iconic cone brassiere strut into our minds forever. A quintessential Madonna moment.
2. DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN, 1985
Her turn in the comedy film Desperately Seeking Susan was peak 1980s Madonna – red lipstick, headscarf, sunglasses and plenty of jewelry. And the look has its legacy today, too, with her iconic jacket selling for $252,000 at a 2014 auction.

The music video to her 1990 hit Vogue mixed old with new, blending the style of 1920sblack-and-white movies with vogue dancers from Harlem’s ballroom dance scene. At the center is Madonna herself, looking like a star from Hollywood’s golden era.
