Backstage interview with Madonna at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards
Madonna joined Billboard backstage at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards to talk about the preparation for her hologram-filled performance of Medellín with Maluma.
Madonna confessed that she started planning the high-tech performance many months ago.
The performance featured a combination of augmented reality and virtual reality, and they took a lot of time on preparation and filming.
“Rehearsals for the personas on the green screen took a couple of weeks,” said Madonna. “Then rehearsals for the actual performance by myself without Maluma a couple of weeks, and then with Maluma about a week.”
Madonna also talked about Crave. She wrote a first version of the track during the very first album process with Starrah and then she decided to revisit it with Lisbon’s musicians.
Madonna described Crave as “a song about desire and longing.” She also confessed that Crave started as a solo song and she decided to include Swae Lee on the track because when hearing the original demo, she decided to include a male artist on it so she opted for the American singer/rapper since she liked the way he sounded and his songwriting skills, describing him as very talented.
